Aug. 15, 2023 — CSC has announced five new research projects that aim to enhance the influence of the LUMI infrastructure and promote Finnish research on a global scale.

These projects will partner Finnish researchers with their counterparts from the US and Japan. Chosen from an Open Call for Expressions of Interest, these projects will tap into LUMI supercomputer’s capabilities to tackle key research areas such as climate science, clean energy, and physics and astronomy.

This initiative is a continuation of CSC’s broader effort to magnify LUMI’s global presence and foster ties with researchers from the US and Japan. Two such projects had already been introduced earlier in 2023. The Finnish Ministry of Education and Culture has made all these projects possible.

Finland-US Collaborative Projects

Finland-Japan Collaborative Project

This project follows on the heels of two prior Finland-Japan collaborations, focusing on glaciology and privacy-protective machine learning.

Project Duration and Collaborative Agreements

The collaborative projects kicked off in June and are slated to run through September 2025. The partnership with researchers from Colorado is founded on a state-level Memorandum of Understanding between the Finnish government and the State of Colorado, signed in February 2022, with a primary focus on computing technologies and green economy. Meanwhile, the cooperation with Japan stems from a Memorandum of Cooperation inked in May 2022 between CSC and Japan’s premier HPC institution, the RIKEN Center for Computational Sciences (R-CCS).
